Website or Instagram: what comes first for a business

Instagram brings people in; the website converts them. When to invest in each, what it costs, and what you need ready before building a website.

Instagram comes first when the business is not yet clear about what it sells or to whom; the website comes first when there are already sales and people ask the same questions every day. Most businesses in Medellín need both, but not at the same time, and the most expensive mistake is building the website before having a brand identity and your own material.

The practical rule: Instagram brings people in, the website converts them. If there are no people yet, there is nobody to convert.

When Instagram comes first

When the business is under a year old, when the offer still changes every month, or when the owner cannot explain in two sentences what makes them different. Instagram is cheap to start, forgives changes and returns data fast: which reel people liked, which product they asked about, which price made noise.

A business at this stage that invests $1,500,000 COP in a website usually ends up with a pretty page saying things that are no longer true six months later.

When the website comes first

When sales already come through social media and these symptoms appear: you answer the same five questions on WhatsApp every day, you lose clients because they cannot find prices or hours, people search for you on Google and you do not show up, or you need to look serious in front of a company requesting a formal quote.

At that point the website stops being an expense and becomes the employee who serves customers while you sleep. And on Google, the website is the only thing that ranks; Instagram barely appears in search.

What you need ready before building the website

This is where the most money is lost, which is why at D3lab we say it before quoting.

Brand identity. Logo, colors, typography and a clear idea of how the brand speaks. Without it, the site is designed blind and ends up looking like the template it came from. If it does not exist, it gets built first: at D3lab, identity with brand manual is $1,700,000 COP.

Your own material. Photos and videos of the real business: product, team, premises, process. A website with stock photos looks like what it is. If there is no material, production is quoted separately, and the $1,500,000 COP base website is designed with what exists in the meantime.

Copy with intent. What you sell, to whom, how much it costs and what the visitor must do. We write it together, but the owner has to know the answer.

A contact channel that actually answers. WhatsApp with a reply under an hour is worth more than a form nobody checks.

What a base website includes

At D3lab the base website costs $1,500,000 COP and includes up to five sections (home, services or products, about, portfolio or gallery, contact), technical SEO so Google reads it properly, a form and a WhatsApp button, and a mobile-first design, which is where 80% of visitors will see it. Extra pages, online store or booking systems are quoted separately.

What it does not include, stated plainly: photo and video production, brand identity if it does not exist, and paid ads to drive traffic.

The order we recommend

First, three months of social content with strategy, to learn what sells and how the brand speaks. Second, brand identity if it does not exist, informed by those three months. Third, one photo and video session of the real business. Fourth, the website, built with identity, material and copy that already proved to work. Fifth, paid ads that drive traffic from social media and Google to the site.

Doing it backwards, website first and everything else later, is the most common way to pay twice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build the website with my Instagram content? Yes, if the Instagram content is yours and of good quality. Often reels shot for social media work as website video.

How long does a base website take? Three to five weeks once identity and material are delivered. Without material, the timeline is set by production.

Does the website include domain and hosting? We guide the domain purchase in the client's name and set up hosting. The annual domain fee is paid by the client directly, so it is always theirs.
